Beyond the Independent Data Layer: An Owner-Built AI Agent Platform at UCSF
The usual model is that an owner builds the independent data layer and buys applications on top of it. UCSF Health decided to build the application tier too.
Gabe Sandoval (Sr. Controls and Commissioning Engineer, UCSF Health) walks through the federated AI agent platform behind a six-hospital, roughly 3 million sq ft portfolio: a tiered reasoning approach that runs simple rules first, a local model next, and a frontier model only when needed. His case is that one BAS engineer with AI-assisted development tools can now do what used to take a multi-year vendor engagement.
