July/August 2021 Member Digest
Hey there gamechangers!
Welcome to another Member Digest… a collection of recent highlights you shouldn’t miss. Speaking of members, there are over 300 of you now! It's an honor and privilege to see this group grow and connect with one another.
These digests are designed to save you time and allow you to catch up on the whole month. Or, in this case, two months. Then you can dive deeper wherever you’d like.
Enjoy.

1—Member Gatherings (Recordings)
July's Pro member gathering focused on workforce development, featuring 4 Pro members with unique takes on what I think is still a big elephant in the (virtual) room: scaling up smart building tech requires scaling up our teams of smart humans. Although as usual, you Pro members see the elephant very clearly, as shown by this poll from the event:

This was a great session... catch the recording here.

For August's Pro member gathering, I enjoyed having Pro members Brad Kult and Ruairi Barnwell share their experiences building local smart building communities in Minneapolis and Chicago. They shared what they've learned from the early years of the Building Intelligence Group (BIG), where the org is headed, and those in the US can get involved by leading expansion into new cities.
2—Members-only goodies from July and August
In case you missed them, members received 4 deeper dives since our last digest:
- SME Workshop: State of the BAS Industry with Matt Schwartz—This was a great follow up on our 3-part series on the BAS industry targeting larger, more sophisticated buildings. Great Q&A session at the end too!
- Recording of the Live Broadcast: The Energy Management Software Landscape—In this live broadcast, I unpacked the Energy Management Hierarchy of Needs and used it to explain today's energy management software landscape.
- The Lens: Energy Program Management—The Lens is a recurring series where I unpack the strategy and context behind the news in as few bullet points as possible. For past editions, check out Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, Vol. 4. Volume 5 is a special follow up on the above Live Broadcast focused on the latest trends in energy program management software.
- SME Workshop: Mike Barker on putting a building's energy model to work—IBPSA committee member and energy engineering veteran Mike Barker presented August's SME workshop on where building performance simulation (AKA energy modeling) technology is going and how it plays in the high-performance building and smart buildings spaces.
3—Member conversations
As always, there have also been some great LinkedIn and Connect conversations, in case you missed any of them:
- Data Tagging - New Construction and Retrofit Projects
- Cloud AI|ML Technology HVAC Control and Monitoring Solutions
- Tom Arnold on limitations to AI approaches for HVAC optimization
- To get to a zero carbon buildings sector, this IEA report says we must...
- Tenant Experience Apps = The Tip of the Digital Building Iceberg
4—SME Workshops featuring… you!
What are you an expert in? I know that each of you has a deep expertise that would help us move forward as a community. Our SME workshops are a great way to get your name out there, build relationships, and get feedback on your ideas.
To can grab a spot on our calendar in the future to teach the community... just send me an email and we'll work out the details.
Speaking of SME workshops, I've created a new SME Workshops archive page to make it easier to revisit and discover oldies-but-goodies.
Stayed tuned for invites for September's SME workshop on Real Time Carbon Accounting.
5—The Nexus Labs Jobs Board: Early Launch for Pro Members!
Ever since starting the newsletter, companies have been reaching out for help filling job openings. Thanks to a new startup called Pallet, I've now launched a tool to help with just that! They've built software that allows me to:
- Curate jobs and quickly review them for quality (you'll see "posting guidelines" as I'll be checking both for fit with our community and company DEI commitments)
- Charge a fee for postings to fund our time
- Easily share them with the Nexus audience
If you'd like to get an open job at your company on the board, here's my request to you, which should take less than 15 mins:
- Post one job using the "Launch Promo!" tier for free by 9/6 - I'm happy to do this for you if you send me a link to the posting and application
- If you'd like to post more than one job, please use the Standard ($250) or Promoted ($500) tiers depending your preference. As promised, there's a 20% discount code: 'PROMEMBERS'.
- After you're done, please send me any feedback!
The board is located here. And we have a new page on our website that lists the "promoted" jobs and links to the board. I'll launch the board on 9/7 (day after Labor Day) with a dedicated Nexus Newsletter about it.
