Kickstart your learning this year

January 3, 2023

This edition of the Nexus Newsletter is brought to you by Altura Associates and Smart Buildings Center.

Hey friends,

Happy New Year!

I'm back after taking a few weeks off for R&R and some exploration off of my normal beaten path. I can't think about smart buildings 24/7/365, can I?

Before we talk about smart buildings, I have some carveouts to share from my explorations:

  1. Movies—I really loved the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.
  2. Podcasts—I caught up on my favorite show, Acquired. If you like business and tech strategy, start with the recent episodes on Walmart, Amazon, and AWS.
  3. Books—I read a lot during the last few weeks. Favorites: The Psychology of Money (Reread), The E Myth (Reread), The E Myth CFO, The 12 Week Year (reread), Megathreats, Born to Run 2, 7 Powers (Reread), and Encounters with the Archdruid

I also found an amazing ski trail through the trees at Breckenridge. But if I shared the exact location, I'd hafta kill ya. 😜

As you can see from my listening and reading list, I've been thinking a lot about business strategy. As a technical founder without a business background, it's a necessity to continuously learn so I can navigate my blind spots: hiring, finance, growth, etc.

Over the last few years, my learning practice of reading business books and taking online courses has changed my life. I've read continuously and taken courses in writing, marketing, product strategy, venture capital, and more that have helped round out my skillset. This practice is a big reason you're reading this right now!

Here's the thing: Any of you can apply this same strategy to your smart buildings learning journey. You can create your own personal learning practice. It starts with a healthy balance of humility and self-compassion.

As Evelyn says in Everything Everywhere All At Once: "We're All Small And Stupid." That's the humility part.

But as her husband Waymond says: "The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind. Especially when we don't know what's going on." That's the self-compassion part. Our world is rapidly evolving—we must be nice to ourselves as we find our way.

In 2023, we at Nexus Labs plan to create a lot more content to aid in your personal learning practices. But for now, our existing resources are an amazing place to start:

  • Nexus Lore: The Smart Building Blocks—This is Nexus Labs' white paper on the core concepts that come up again and again in the newsletter, on the Nexus podcast, in the Nexus Foundations course, and in Nexus Pro gatherings, and in the community chatroom.
  • The Building Analytics Comparison Guide—There are actually two kinds of Fault Detection & Diagnostics software: those that stop at the first “D” (Detection) and those that go all the way to Diagnostics. This white paper tells the story of that second “D” and why it’s so important.
  • The State of Operations & Maintenance Software—Tells the story of Operations  & Maintenance software like it’s never been told before—including today’s mess of siloed and fragmented building systems, why an overlay is needed, the types of overlays on the market, and how each of them meets those needs.
  • The Untapped 87%: Simplifying Controls Technology for Small Buildings—To decarbonize the buildings sector, we need to remove the complexity in deploying controls to the Long Tail of 6 million buildings under 50,000 square feet.

That's over 50,000 free words to kickstart your learning this year. And when you're ready to take the plunge into our paid content, the Nexus Pro membership and the Nexus Foundations course are here to support your journey.

Here's the thing about personal learning practices though: it's on you to make it what you want it to be. And it's not always easy. You gotta make the time and put in the effort.

Let's go!

What's on your learning list this year?
