Nexus Labs' Year in Review

December 27, 2022

This edition of the Nexus Newsletter is brought to you by Altura Associates and Smart Buildings Center.

Hey friends,

As we celebrate the holidays and start to wind down the year, I'm reflecting on the progress we've made in accelerating the transition to digital and decarbonized buildings.

Here are my highlights of 2022:

  • Nexus newsletter readership (you guys!) has grown 150% year over year—we're now almost 6,000 strong! Top newsletter editions of the year included The Energy Spreadsheet Must Die, Supervisory Control from the 80's, What's a Building OS?, The Mythical SPoG, and JCI Sues Upstarts.
  • The Nexus Podcast is now averaging 7,000 listens per month. I'm super proud of the 14 episodes we published on decarbonization—it's an unparalleled resource on the roadmap to decarbonize real estate. See below for our top 5 episodes of the year! Some of them surprised me.
  • The Nexus Pro community—the true smart buildings nerd crew—has grown at the same rate to 470 members. Our member gatherings profiled the smart buildings programs of many building owner organizations, including BXP, Dartmouth, Dream, Cadillac Fairview, Macerich, and Lendlease.
  • We graduated 150 new alumni of our flagship course, Nexus Foundations, including private cohorts for WiredScore, Arcadis, Willow, and more.
  • Our Nexus Lore whitepaper provided my take (after listening to the community for 2+ years) on where the industry needs to go from a technology architecture perspective. The #IDL movement has really hit its stride this year! I spoke at conferences including Realcomm/IBcon, Greenbuild, Verge 22, and the Smart Buildings Exchange to spread the word.
  • We launched the Nexus Labs creator program, which will diversify the topics and voices coming at you.
  • We launched an angel syndicate, allowing our community to participate in early-stage venture capital investments in smart building technology startups. The syndicate has invested in two startups so far, with more to come in 2023.

I'm sharing this to say thank you, first and foremost, for being part of it.

Thanks to you, I was able to close our consulting practice to focus full time on Nexus. Thanks to you, we're bringing on a COO starting in January to accelerate the impact we can make. Thanks to you, we're making plans for better content, more courses, and deeper partnerships.

Here's to you.

Happy holidays!

—James Dice and the Nexus Labs team

P.S. Nexus t-shirts!
