1—Newsletter & podcast highlights
As always, we shipped our Tuesday newsletter and Thursday podcast each week. I also kept my commitment to daily LinkedIn instigation (😂) on Monday-Thursday.
My highlights for those of you that are short-on-time:
- We launched the Nexus Labs Syndicate for investing in smart buildings startups. You can join in on the fun for as little as $1k per deal.
- Volume 10 of The Lens brought together our recent coverage of M&A activity in decarbonization software and continues our series on the growth and importance of platform business models in the digitization and decarbonization of the buildings industry.
- The newsletter and podcast now include short-and-sweet messages from sponsors. If you're interested in sponsoring, you can find the info here.
- I shared how Supervisory Control hasn't changed since the 1980's and how new technology is taking advantage of that.
- Interesting discussion on LinkedIn: Should real estate companies build their own smart building technology?
- My "Single Pain in the Ass" takedown post went semi-viral
- Finally, I loved the last two months of podcast episodes. Topics included the role of consultants, decarbonization, and even robots. If you only have time for one, I'd say Bruce Duyshart is a safe bet!

3—Interesting chatroom posts and conversations
- Why is the BAS industry so stuck? And the home automation industry is easy and much more advanced? by Ben Bartling—Ben is tinkering around with installing Home Assistant on a Linux computer on his home LAN, Wi-Fi system. He asks why can't the BAS industry be like this: the organization's IT person could just create the GUI, auto-discover all the devices, and maintain the facilities OT GUI. From his experience, anything OT related even the GUI's for BAS is very hands-off for the IT department unless they are really actually needed.
- Grid-interactive Efficient Building Controls - an intro by Mike Barker—Mike shares a neat intro to how buildings of the future will co-exist with the grid. He also invites us to a FREE webinar on October 4-5 with Southern California Edison and Tanya Barham to learn the steps to reduce peak energy consumption while electrifying buildings and satisfying occupant comfort.
- Real-time occupancy: binary status or count? by Claire Quinn—Thoughts on how use cases differ if the occ data shows just the status of a space (occupied or not) v. the count (number of people) in a space.
- Best smart building related conference in the UK? by James Dice—Pro Members weigh in on the best smart buildings conferences in the UK.
- Hardwire v. Integration Lighting Controls to BAS by Nicholas Pavlak—Nicholas shares his experience with a large building renovation where the entire HVAC and lighting systems are being replaced and upgraded.
- 5G landlord responsibilities by Paul Bamber—Paul's first post! 👏 He asks other members about their experiences when it comes to the landlord's responsibilities of providing 5G in their building.
