Partner Pulse: What’s New With Mapped?

May 10, 2024

Welcome to our Partner Pulse series. Nexus Labs’ Partners are at the forefront of the smart buildings revolution. With any revolution, there is continuous change while momentum builds. We want to keep our audience informed of accomplishments, breakthroughs, deployments, and developments within the companies leading our industry. We hope you enjoy this straightforward summary of what’s new at Mapped, one of the leaders in the Independent Data Layer category.

It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down with industry experts like Shaun Cooley, CEO of Mapped, in our debate over the promise of the independent data layer (Change My Mind: The Independent Data Layer). But, in reality, that conversation is almost a year old now, and in that year companies like Mapped were in the early days of product-to-market fit. We took a moment to dive into what’s new at Mapped over the last year.

Highlights:

  • Deployed in over 900 buildings and 180million sqft
  • Expanded from 2 verticals to 7 this year
  • 200 data “connectors” and counting
  • Zero churn to date and a positive net dollar retention rate
  • All of this with the same team size

What does Mapped do?

The team at Mapped describes themselves as “the independent data layer for the real world.”

The Mapped elevator pitch:

Mapped is data infrastructure for the real world that automates the otherwise tedious and manual process of data discovery, extraction, and normalization from real-world spaces such as retail, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, office buildings, data centers, stadiums, airports, warehouses, and more - powering both direct customer use cases and a growing number of vendor solutions.
Mapped software automatically discovers assets and uses AI on the cloud to create a unified data graph about people, places, things, and processes from any building's networks, automation systems, APIs, and IoT devices.
The Mapped platform swiftly onboards data, resolving ongoing technical integration challenges and offering robust data ownership. It cost-effectively ensures superior control over data sharing, security, and privacy while streamlining future integrations.

The IDL category has been near and dear to the Nexus Labs education platform for years (in fact, it’s sort of the central concept of the Nexus Lore, so start there if you aren’t familiar with the term IDL). Additionally, Nexus Labs’ first interview with Mapped CEO Shaun Cooley about “one API for your building” dates back to 2021. As detailed below, Mapped’s growth shows that the IDL continues to gain promise for the industry.

Who are Mapped's customers?

Mapped’s customer base has grown quite a bit in the last year. They now serve over 900 buildings, totaling over 180 million square feet worldwide. While Mapped was previously just deploying in offices, they have now expanded with successful deployments in retail, industrial, healthcare, higher-ed, airports, and stadiums. Some notable customers benefitting from the Mapped software include Dallas Fort Worth Airport Terminals, Northern Arizona University, SoFi Stadium, Brookfield, RxR, Ascension Health, Honeywell, Intel, Autodesk, Azbil, Goldman Sachs, and Microsoft.

Mapped also goes to market through channel partners. They partner with leading global corporates, prop-tech companies, master systems integrators, and independent software vendors, who resell the Mapped IDL as an infrastructure layer for their software applications (as we predicted back in 2021). To name a few: Microsoft, Honeywell, Sutherland Global, Willow, View, and Dar Group, among others.

What's new with the product?

Much of the rapid growth in customer base and deployments is directly attributable to Mapped platform’s automated data-discovery and mapping capabilities. The Mapped platform ingests data from what they refer to as a “connector.” They now support over 200 different connectors that support over 12 on-premise protocols, IoT Sensors, and software application APIs, which means they’re able to “Mapp” data from every corner of your skyscraper, or your retail store, or your hospitals, etc.

Mapped has also made great strides regarding the speed and accuracy with which they can deploy their software. To highlight a specific example, a single instance of Mapped edge software discovered over 1.2 million data points across 87 buildings within 12 hours. They were able to automatically map 80% of those points using the BRICK ontology in a week. By week three, they had completed a full QA and data onboarding. This crushed all of Mapped’s previous records; they’re getting faster.

Mapped also has some brand-new additions to its offering. Mapped GPT gives language learning model (LLM) functionality to users of the Mapped platform. Using language-based questions and commands significantly accelerates a user's ability to consume the complex data that Mapped ingests. And for even more technical nerds, look into GEL-01, Mapped’s newly released methodology for normalizing data.

Other updates?

From a funding standpoint, Mapped’s seed round of funding was a $9.5 million investment in 2021. Since then, there have been a few strategic and institutional investors, including Honeywell and NTT.

Mapped works to strategically use this investment money primarily on R&D to continue automating the data-gathering process. Of course, they’ve also focused on meeting their enterprise customers’ needs for portfolio-wide scale, data security, and privacy. As a result, Mapped has seen zero churn from its customer base and prides themselves on significant customer portfolio expansions globally with a positive net dollar retention rate.
