What kinds of projects are you working on?

As a research analyst I have the pleasure of working on a whole broad range of technologies depending on market trends and what's "hot". My current research agenda primarily focuses on integrated workplace management systems (IWMSs)/connected portfolio intelligence platforms (CPIPs) and workplace systems integration. My secondary research coverage areas include space and workplace software, BIM in operations and digital twins for buildings.

What are you excited about in the industry?

So many things! I'm really most excited about how much the industry has changed in the past 4 years since I've been working in it. End-users are starting to become more knowledgeable on the technologies available and more open to using them rather than perceiving technology as a threat. Vendors are finally starting to accept the need to be vendor-agnostic and open to really provide valuable insights for customers.

What do you think needs to change in the industry?

Providers in the market need to be more transparent across so many aspects, including using OEM technology, who their partners are and what third-party solutions they can actually work with. Firms should market actual case studies that show real life benefits of their solutions rather than using a bunch of marketing fluff & buzzwords. On a more general side, we need to encourage the younger generation to join the industry and educate them on smart building technology early on to see some true innovation and growth in adoption.

What do you wish we all discussed more?

We need to be able to walk before we can run. I think the industry has a trend to get excited and focus on the newest technology, such as digital twins or the "metaverse". We need to understand that most buildings in the world are not close to ready to use these advanced technologies - need to help them understand the realistic steps they can take to prepare for these offerings.

What’s your hot take?

🔥 Vendors and service providers need to cut the fluff and teach the stuff. Don't tell us that  platforms are plug-n-play, have AI/ML embedded in it, or any other major buzzwords the industry uses. Show customers how these capabilities actually work and what are the real world benefits - Show, don't tell. 🔥
